Paperback: The Laundry Man by Ken Rijock (Penguin, £8.99)
Ken Rijock was a lawyer. In Florida. In the late 1970s. His girlfriend was a cop. Then someone offered Ken a chance to become a criminal. He said yes. In this true story, we watch as cocaine takes over Ken’s life — he snorts it, and he becomes a money-launderer, flying down to the Caribbean, setting up offshore accounts, thinking he’ll get away with it. There are lots of tense moments. Ken gets paid in coke. Help! What happens if he gets caught? He gets sucked deeper into criminality. He looks for signs that the cops are wise to the gang he works for. Of course, they catch him in the end. Nice detail, for students of the period.
