Alice Channer has found a refreshing voice

Further east at the small Approach gallery, Alice Channer initially appears to be a kind of minimalist but her delicate touch slowly reveals itself.
She takes off-the-peg clothes - a Primark snake print vest and trousers and a lizard print skirt - and subjects them to a complex transformation, all the while hinting at the body beneath.
In two beautiful drawings over a marbled wash, each mark in the pattern formed by the broken up, photocopied, and enlarged reptilian print is painstakingly rendered by hand, with tiny gestures recalling handwriting or Arabic script.
A large sculpture, Slip (2011), is formed of three undulating curves. Stretched over them vertically are elastic bands in different shades, which soften as they are reflected in the curling steel, and form a gentle pattern which abuts the serpentine lines of the reflected wooden floor. Suddenly industrial metal takes on the feel of fabric caught mid-ripple.
Here, Channer addresses the time-honoured components of sculpture, material, space and the human body. It is hard for artists to find new ways of negotiating such territory but with her idiosyncratic balance of industrial precision and handmade sensuality, Channer has found a refreshing voice.
Alice Channer is until April 17 (020 8983 3878, theapproach.co.uk)
