A portrait of Mary, Queen of Scots, is 200 years older than previously thought, dating back to her lifetime or shortly after her execution for treason in 1587 at the age of 44.
The small picture, which depicts Mary after her return to Scotland following the death of her first husband, King Francis II of France, was previously thought to have been painted in the 18th century.
Analysis has now established that the panel, at the National Portrait Gallery, dates from 1560-1592.
