Damien Hirst has been snubbed by his peers.
Five hundred British painters were asked to name their favourite artists in a poll to coincide with the first Great Art Fair.
Portrait painter Lucian Freud, whose subjects have included Kate Moss and the Queen, topped the list, beating their fellow Britons Howard Hodgkin and David Hockney into second and third place.
Hirst polled only one vote. J M W Turner came fourth, followed by Spanish abstract artist Antoni Tapies. Seven out of the top 10 are still alive and seven are British.
Controversial populist Scottish painter Jack Vettriano beat Vincent Van Gogh to finish seventh.
The fair, the UK's largest art show, will host more than 350 exhibitors, ranging from Tate Britain painter Philip Sutton to graduate talents, when it opens in London next week.
• The Great Art Fair runs from 30 November to 3 December at Alexandra Palace.
