Gormley plans 30 life-sized London sculptures

The artist behind the massive Angel of the North sculpture is planning 30 life-sized sculptures of himself on top of some of London's landmarks.

Antony Gormley's statues will be part of his exhibition at the Hayward Gallery on the South Bank in May.

They are intended to be seen by people visiting the show and will be on the Shell Centre, the National Theatre, Imperial College and Waterloo Bridge.

He said: "I want to make the familiar a bit different and quietly invade what is often an ignored horizon. The idea is that all are looking towards the Hayward."

Gormley has just won a battle to keep 81 cast-iron male figures on a Merseyside beach.
