Marepe's carousel
Fairground attraction: a sketch of Marepe's carousel

From slides to a carousel

Following Carsten Holler's popular slides, Brazilian artist Marepe is to show a carousel at Tate Modern.

His Victorian-style fairground ride, garlanded with toffee apples and topped with a canopy made from rubbish, will arrive in the Turbine Hall in May, a month after Holler's slides are dismantled. The Tate defended both artists' work as "serious art".

But David Lee, editor of art magazine Jackdaw, said: "What the Tate has proved ... is that if you turn art galleries into amusement arcades you will get a lot of people through the door."
