Breaking the mould: Sculptor Antony Gormley and Resolution in the City of London

Look here too

A sculpture by Antony Gormley which is intended to resemble both a man and a city has been unveiled.

Resolution is the first sculpture by the acclaimed artist to be situated in the City of London.

It takes the form of a life-size cast-iron figure looking out over the street and was created within a mould of the artist's own body and from many cast-iron blocks "evoking the block of the urban grid".

Gormley said: "Seen from afar it looks like a man, from close up it looks like a city. It is wonderful to be able to site a work that interacts with the daily life of the street.

"Resolution is a pixellated body made physical that will stay night and day, summer and winter, while pedestrians pass it by and the tree grows bigger through successive springs."

The work, sited at the junction of Shoe Lane and St Bride Street, has been installed as part of the City of London's Street Scene Challenge initiative. The £2 million project aims to enhance the streets in collaboration with respected architects, designers and artists.

Resolution is part of a major redesign of the Shoe Lane Quarter around Fleet Street to enhance the street scene environment for City workers, residents and tourists.
