It is already housed in an old power station but now Tate Modern has been named as a powerhouse on the international art scene.

The Thames-side gallery has made it on to a list of the world's top ten art museums, it was revealed yesterday.

Its outstanding collections of international modern and contemporary art secured it eighth place - alongside some illustrious competition.

Visitors described the London attraction as a 'must-see' and the gallery itself called on culture lovers to enjoy its 'electric art'.

The list ranked museums by popularity based on hits on the TripAdvisor website. Paris's Musee du Louvre claimed top spot, with one tourist saying: 'Each time I visit I always discover new treasures.'

Second was the Vatican Museums in Rome, while in third place came New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Also making it into the top ten were Florence's Uffizi Gallery and the J Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles.

TripAdvisor's Michele Perry said: 'This top ten is a checklist to see the finest art in the world.'
