An hour of fun from Rob Schneider

There was one major surprise during Rob Schneider’s London show last night. The US stand-up, best known for appearances in the shamelessly trashy Deuce Bigalow film franchise, revealed that his background is Jewish — no shock — but also Filipino, so his childhood house "smelt of soy sauce and the Holocaust". A well-crafted line in a set full of well-crafted lines but largely unburdened by earth-shattering insights.

Like many visiting Americans, Schneider’s relaxed sardonic style was faultless but his material covered over-trodden terrain. This frequently felt less like a gig and more like a ticklist of foolproof comedy clichés, from George W Bush’s pronunciation to airline security via adverts, the recession, dodgy accents and the eternal gender wars. Simply uttering the words "Tiger Woods" got one of the biggest laughs of the night.

Every now and again, though, Schneider proved that he is a cut above the average gagsmith. A chillingly accurate Christopher Walken impression added oomph to a predictable routine about celebrity-voiced satnavs and a riff about the fleeting nature of existence offered some unexpected philosophical heft. Nothing here to rock comedy’s foundations but a hugely effective hour of fun.
