Chris Ramsey, Soho Theatre - review

Last summer Chris Ramsey was the surprise recipient of an Edinburgh Comedy Award nomination.

The 25-year-old was barely known then but word is spreading. The Soho Theatre was rammed last night for the London transfer. And justifiably.

Ramsey's aim is to champion "Offermation", the unsolicited trivia lurking on the internet and in real conversations. The hyperactive comedian adores this phenomenon, reading from round- robin letters his mum receives discussing holidays, patios and vegetables. These missives provide the narrative curve between tangents about trendy Manchester, eating out and TV series Geordie Shore. Ramsey is from South Shields so knows the latter subject well.

The result is a zippy monologue that oozes warmth thanks to a natural rapport with the crowd. A riff regarding the cat bin lady feels dated but he tackles it succinctly ("slam dunk miaow") and while other topics feel scattershot, a Dave Gorman-ish finale closes proceedings neatly. The only fault? Ramsey's annoyingly fashionable windswept hairdo.
