Comedians can deal with hecklers but a flatulent dog onstage is another matter. This latest gig by the organisation that mounts shows in museums, launderettes and libraries took place in the garden of the O’Brien family, following a generous donation to this paper’s Christmas charity auction.

And continuing in the charitable spirit, compere Terry Saunders plus Brett Goldstein, Fergus Craig and Tiernan Douieb showed considerable versatility, swapping their nuanced routines for something broader to cater for boisterous elements that had been enjoying Mr O’Brien’s birthday party alcohol.

After Saunders’ skilful crowd control warm-up, which attracted laughs and the over-familiar canine, Goldstein pitched in with an impressively assured riff about dodging scary kids in Stockwell who carry their own yellow crime incident signs to save police time.

Craig displayed the promise that recently won him Hackney Empire’s New Act of the Year with an inspired mix of surreal banter,
non-racist funny accents and added swearing.

Finally, it was Douieb’s turn in the lions’ den. It was touch and go but his sheer force of personality and bulletproof confidence kept both the hecklers and the farting dog at bay.
