Well, this is certainly different. In an age when comedy is often so processed, it comes vacuum-sealed and ready for mass consumption, Doktor Cocacolamcdonalds stands out. With freeform appearance, freeform jokes and freeform music, this is a truly weird kind of anti-humour. Once seen never forgotten, said one critic. You may only want to see him once.

He was certainly eye-catching, sporting nightmarish white face-paint, Speedos and little else. It is a shame the material did not live up to the look. The show consisted largely of tone-free protest rants such as Feed Celebrities To The Third World ('I'm gonna make you an Elton John curry') backed by guitar, ancient electronic keyboards and a bleeping Nintendo Game Boy.

This is delivered in such a shambolic style that it is hard to tell if the nervousness is part of the act. I have seen this performer do successful shorter spots and he was probably over-extending himself attempting a full-length show. In small doses this is an effective, engaging proposition, but over 50 minutes the energy frequently dipped and there was none of the winning whimsy of the similarly surreal Mighty Boosh.

What is refreshing about Doktor Cocacolamcdonalds is that he harks back to the more idiosyncratic unregulated Eighties, when anarchic acts such as the irreverent nonconformist Malcolm Hardee could actually carve out a living.

At the end of the gig he explained that even if it was not all funny for us, it was therapeutic for him. The Doktor seems destined for cult status. If he makes it big I'll have to go to a doctor to get treatment for shock.
