Mirth master is a joy

Jason Byrne is a joy to watch. A born comedian and mirth master, his material comes from his life: new baby, missus, his seven-yearold boy and his drunken experience meeting Charles and Camilla backstage at the Royal Variety Performance. His tales are presumably well prepared but his delivery is so natural, they resound with fresh appeal.

It's a shame then that the venue lacks personality. It's understandable as a comic gets more popular, that the crowds and venues get bigger, but Byrne delights in gurning and visual humour, making him a joy up close. It's hard not to feel a little cheated when you're far away while the front row are in hysterics.

Still, it's doubtful Byrne will be moving to a smaller venue any time soon - and he deserves to be this loved - so check out his late-night shows. He's a killer when the gig's intimate.

Until Aug 25 (not Aug 13 and 20), Assembly Hall, 8.40pm (Aug 26 and 27 9.30pm), £12 to £14.50. www.assemblyfestival.com
