Nina Conti and the missing link

Ventriloquist Nina Conti’s last show picked up a Barry Award at the Melbourne Comedy Festival. Her latest set is entitled Evolution, which is ironic because while this has much greater ambition it is nowhere near as advanced. An annoying case of one step forward, two steps back.

The title comes from the premise that Conti’s talking puppet, Monkey, is the missing link. The plot thickens as we get some Darwin, a flash of Freud and frequent bottom-based banter.

The storyline is an inventive cue for the deconstruction of voice-throwing. But somehow the vulgarity overshadows the snappy chat between the star and her chimp chum who cannot understand why his label says "Made in Taiwan" but he sounds like Sean Connery.

There’s lots here — including a jaunty song, powerpoint presentation and, easily best, a postmodern cameo from Conti’s father Tom in rubbery puppet form — yet this also feels oddly slight, with a strangely unsatisfying showstopping end. Maybe Monkey is more weak link than missing link.

What would be really intriguing, for many reasons, would be an entire show featuring Conti with her hand up her latex father’s rear.
