Omid Djalili, Hammersmith Apollo - review

Omid Djalili's return to stand-up comes after a period of diversification. He has starred in movies, played Fagin onstage and done those MoneySupermarket adverts. He is truly an all-round entertainer - we aren't just talking waistbands - and his live show, Tour of Duty, reflected that, mixing music with sharp satire, stupid accents and quips corny enough for the late Frank Carson.

From the moment he appeared, the bouncy Anglo-Iranian successfully sold even his weaker material by sheer force of personality. He barely needed a microphone or the additional witty commentary on his giant iPhone-shaped backdrop as he bellowed gags about Gaddafi, recalled being billed as a DJ called Alili and gossiped about squabbles making Sex and the City 2. More impressive was a smarter routine noting that while in the Middle East riots were followed by the Arab Spring, here they were followed by sweeping up.

Djalili's challenge is reconciling his compulsion to comment on heavy foreign affairs with his light entertainment urges. His best moments united both.

Following his appearance in Oliver! he joked he was shortlisted... "for two suicide bombing missions". The overall balance was uneven, but charm and a surprisingly fleet-footed interpretative dance finale sent everyone home smiling.
