Pajama Men are oddball, deranged and seriously funny

There is a time traveller, some skiing, a robot and a talking forehead.

Beyond that you are on your own when it comes to deciphering the finer plot points in the latest exhilarating show from American duo Mark Chavez and Shenoah Allen. One thing is clear, though. In the Middle of No One, which launches the Soho Theatre's dinky cabaret-style 140-seat basement space, beautifully highlights the twosome's exquisite physical comedy skills.

The madcap performers do not use costumes or props apart from a couple of chairs, but they totally inhabit a galaxy of characters, from nervy hospital patients to a ponytailed centaur to a pair of marionettes with tangled strings. Their finest tool is their gift for mimicry, as they switch personae at a moment's notice. Occasionally they veer towards recognisable genre parodies - melodrama, sci-fi blockbuster - but they then take things in an entirely unexpected direction.

Towards the end there is a narrative climax of sorts. Chavez's time traveller has to go back to the past to make amends for the fact that he stole his time-travel formula. This wraps things up neatly, but not before we've had a reprise of the talking forehead.

Oddball, seriously deranged and cleverly funny, with nicely unobtrusive music from Kevin Hume.

There is an atom of The Mighty Boosh here but only an atom. Put simply, there is nothing else going on in comedy quite like this at the moment. Not really a must-see show, more a must-experience event.
