It must be every comedian's worst nightmare to walk onstage and have to improvise instant routines based on unexpected topics. Well, that's what stand-ups do at this new event. Set List has been a hit in America but on its first night here the only real fun was watching gifted gagsmiths wriggle in agony as their riffs failed to fly.

Opener Robin Ince could fulminate for England but he struggled to concoct an apt pay-off on the subject of "Mystery Implant". Ince was followed by Adam Bloom, who imploded with an outrageously sexist remark that would make Jeremy Clarkson cringe. Matt Kirshen deserves praise for helping to import this concept but unfortunately he was stumped by "Considerate Zombies".

Rich Hall lifted the gloom, finding humour in Bergmanesque imagery for "Swedish Aggression". Hall barely broke sweat, unlike a palpably petrified Stephen K Amos, who rattled out 10 minutes of punchline-less patter. Ben Norris closed with some impressively dark surrealism, offering relief on a night which did not fully deliver. There was perverse enjoyment watching professionals fail, though, but just think how thrilling it would be to see them succeed. Dara O'Briain appears tonight. What can go wrong?
