You get good value at a Terry Alderton gig. Not one Alderton but two. Since his return to the live circuit in recent years the Essex gagsmith has developed a jet-powered, twin-pronged act that is as disturbing as it is funny, offering quickfire quips between a darker version of himself voicing sinister asides. Welcome to the Jekyll and Hyde of stand-up.

Balancing these personae, however, is difficult. On Saturday the audience seemed to prefer his borderline politically incorrect foreign accents and brilliant mimicry. Alderton did such a wonderfully fidgety Lee Evans impression one believed the madcap loon had hijacked the stage.

When Alderton's Steven Berkoff-toned alter ego kicked in, the response was muted. During an uneasy routine about marital difficulties one didn't know whether to laugh or refer him to Relate.

It did not help that there were a few hitches with musical cues but Alderton handled the glitches with good grace and an inspired cockney robot dance. He also - note to Billy Connolly - handled hecklers well.

At his best he combined the surreal wizardry of Eddie Izzard, the laddishness of Micky Flanagan and the distinctly unhinged. Sometimes hilarious, sometimes uncomfortable, uniquely intriguing.
