Tim Key is the antithesis of the identikit observational comedians one currently sees on television standing on shiny floors telling shiny jokes. He writes oblique poetry, makes short films and sings Russian pop songs. All of these elements appear in his latest show, Masterslut, a more ambitious and impressive project than its verse-heavy predecessor, Slutcracker, which won an Edinburgh Comedy Award in 2009.

This may be high concept comedy but it is definitely not anti-comedy. The dishevelled performer - more Serge Gainsbourg than John Bishop - has genuine funny bones. Laughs bubble through his subtly crafted set. His entrance - literally climbing over the audience - is terrific and things get even better as Key chats, strolls around and tinkers with an onstage bath.

Proceedings shuttle inventively between cinematic scenes onscreen and live action, setting a new high-water mark for immersive, multimedia comedy.

There are actual jokes too. Not many, but one about preparations before visiting a drive-through McDonald's is almost worth the ticket price alone.

In fact, food, alongside water, is a motif, with a routine about what one must not do on a date in an Italian restaurant also prompting ripples of giggles. If you like your gags with a garnish of artistic depth, give Key a try. You will not regret taking the plunge.
