Tommy Tiernan is a major star in his native Ireland and a few minutes into this gig it was easy to see why. Strolling on in his shiny lounge singer suit he playfully switched on a children's bubble machine to symbolise the big bang and swiftly warmed up a chilly audience with an edgy, exciting, exemplary display of intelligent, irreverent comedy.

For the noticeably Irish-accented crowd, who had probably enjoyed him on BBC1's Live at the Apollo, the real thing was much more raw. Too raw for some. At one point, during a splenetic rant about attitudes to mental illness, a fan approached the stage and protested that this was not a subject for humour. A tense stand-off was resolved when Tiernan justifiably declared: "I'm on your side."

This was an extreme moment in a compelling show of extremes, with ideas expressed in a lyrical whisper or hellfire preacher's scream. Topics ranged from the Bible's cruelty to his country's economic woes - "Even the woman who gives you the dole is on the dole." Most impressively, he found a new angle on the cliché of parenthood, beautifully describing his "stealth child" who can appear out of nowhere. Unlike those bubbles, Tiernan's career shows no sign of bursting.

Tonight, then Leicester Square Theatre, WC2, Friday and Saturday (0844 847 2405/0844 847 2475, tommytiernan.com)
