Variety's underground goes overground

This is shaping up to be the year variety's underground went overground. Nights have sprung up across London and while some resemble post-modern lapdancing clubs, others deliver an exotic cocktail of decadence, comedy and burlesque. Medium Rare, rumoured to be favoured by certain young royals, falls into the latter camp.

Admittedly during this opening night there were moments that bordered on the avant-garde strippergram, such as when feather-clad artiste La Galu laid an egg from, well, work it out for yourself, but there were also some splendid speciality acts.

New York's cultish Wau Wau Sisters were reduced to Wau Wau Sister Adrienne, due to injury, but she did the work of two on the trapeze, swooping and spinning like a demented top. There was also some fabulously funny wordplay from John Hopkins and Phil Brodie that the Two Ronnies would have envied.

With films, food and further acts, Medium Rare plugs a gap between Jongleurs' soulless fun and something sleazy from Seventies Soho. The Christmas crackers make it feel a little like gatecrashing an office party, but the onstage antics certainly take your mind off Tony from accounts.

Until 15 December. (020 8735 3520, www.mediumrare.tv)
