Early Lowry goes under hammer

The earliest known drawing by LS Lowry will go under the hammer at Sotheby's with an estimate of up to £10,000.

Dating from 1902, when the artist was 15, Yachts was probably drawn during a family holiday at Lytham St Annes on the Lancashire coast.

James Rawlin, head of Sotheby's 20th century British art department, said: "Coastal life was a subject that Lowry returned to throughout his career. It's as though the sea provided an escape for him from the drudgery of everyday working life."

Yachts is being offered alongside 17 other works by Lowry including a view of Blackpool pleasure beach which could make £1 million.
