A bit late to savage Berlusconi

This disappointing film from Nanni Moretti - whose moving Son's Room was a winner at Cannes - purports to be a coruscating attack on Silvio Berlusconi, prime minister of Italy at the time it was made but relegated to leader of the opposition before it was released.

It is, indeed, an attack on a man Moretti deeply despised, using three actors, including Moretti himself, to illustrate the high and low points of his career.

However, it never manages anything very coherent, at least to foreigners who might not be so familiar with the strange intricacies of Italian politics.

The Caiman is a much better film when it concentrates on the efforts of a C-list film-maker to redeem himself by making a serious film for once. His subject is Berlusconi and everyone else has fearfully declined the screenplay.

This film within the film has the excellent Silvio Orlando grappling with an increasingly difficult project and, at the same time, trying to prevent his actress wife (Margherita Buy) from leaving him.

It is a process most ambitious film-makers will readily recognise and, as detailed here, is both funny and moving. But the defeat of Berlusconi makes the polemical part of The Caiman seem a trifle redundant.

The Caiman (Il Caimano)
