A dog's life

Peggy (Molly Shannon), a quiet spinster whose only real comfort is a nice little dog called Pencil, is distraught when the pooch is poisoned by accident. Thanks to Peter Sarsgaard's animal activist, she gets another one and is soon inspired to turn her bungalow into a kennel for impounded dogs.

Writer-director Mike White's comedy, which is principally about letting people derive their happiness in the way they wish, even if that way is mightily eccentric, has an excellent cast of humans and dogs and a particularly splendid performance from Shannon as a Plain Jane with attitude - at least as far as animals are concerned.

But it loses its way, as if uncertain how to point out its moral and make us laugh at the same time.
