A laugh-out-loud script in Down Terrace

Ben Wheatley’s deadpan comedy reclaims the British gangster flick from the mockney doldrums.
Drug dealer Bill and his son Karl are searching for a grass in their midst. Karl’s girlfriend is having a baby. Maybe it’s his. Murders start to stack up. There are baroque monologues. But it all takes place over cups of tea and blues/folk evenings in a cramped Brighton semi and there’s an observational, improvisational feel to the film.
It’s like the Royle Family, but with a family that kills people. Robin Hill wrote the laugh-out-loud script and plays Karl, and his dad, Robert Hill, plays Bill, which undoubtedly helped.
