A lover on the side in The Grocer's Son
23 April 2009
Eric Guirado is a distinguished documentarist and his first feature is at its best when he trains the camera lovingly at the French countryside. The 30-year-old Antoine (Nicolas Cazalé) has had to leave Paris for rural France to help out his grumpy father, who has had a stroke and thinks his son a wastrel, with the family mobile grocery.
Antoine takes Claire (Clotilde Hesme), a girl he fancies, along with him and she teaches him how to be nicer to the old biddies who are all that is left in the tiny hamlets that the grocery serves. So it is that he rediscovers first life and then love in the bucolic beauty of the provinces.
The Grocer’s Son is best described as a feelgood film that doesn’t underrate its audiences too much — there are some lovely moments when the rude boy meets his ancient customers.
It’s certainly warm-hearted but inherently a bit too sentimental to match Raymond Depardon’s recent Modern Life, a documentary that really tells the unvarnished truth about the French countryside and its inhabitants.
