It isn't so strange that the two best horror thrillers showing here just now are both Spanish. There is a very long tradition of such movies in Spain. But the small-budget [Rec] couldn’t be more different from the more swishly mounted The Orphanage.

A bushy-tailed young female TV reporter (Manuela Valasco) naively follows a squad of firemen through the big city night. Their first job is to rescue an old lady trapped in her top-floor apartment. When they try, she screams at them and bites a fireman. Within minutes the police outside the building have mysteriously sealed it off, with firemen, TV crew and panicking residents inside.

The bite is infectious and the fireman goes mad and dies — but not before he’s bitten those attending to him. Slowly but surely, it becomes clear exactly why the police won’t let anyone out. All the TV crew can do is keep on filming while they try desperately to make an escape.

Jaume Balaguero and Paco Plaza, the directors, orchestrate a formidable little tour de force.

But be warned: the shaky hand-held camerawork is just as difficult to watch as it was in Cloverfield. You may feel, if you forgive the analogy, that once bitten, twice shy.
