An honourable portrayal in Anonyma

Max Färberböck's film is an honourable effort to illustrate a period in post-war German history that remained conveniently shrouded for years.

Based on the true story by "Anonyma", it is about the treatment of Berlin's women by Russian soldiers after the war.

Many were raped, others became amateur prostitutes and some, like the author herself - remarkably acted by Nina Hoss - attached themselves to Soviet officers to save themselves from the worst excesses.

The liaison was doomed from the start. Other women found themselves in still worse situations and were cast as traitors.

There is a studied fairness towards both the exhausted Russians and the defeated women.

Färberböck blames no one but the situation itself.
