Andrezej Jakimowski knows the Tricks of the trade

In common with so many Polish directors, Andrezej Jakimowski is obsessed with the peculiar magic of fate and coincidence but unlike Kieslowski, say, he avoids grandly ecstatic/gloomy set-pieces.

Elka and Stefek (impressive youngsters Ewelina Walendziak and Damian Ul) are a sister and brother trying to survive in a picturesque, impoverished village.

She wants a job with an Italian firm, he wants his errant dad to come home.

The scowling, quizzical Stefek is especially engaging. His tortuous and often barmy quest is part of a charm offensive that never feels underhand.

Tricks (Sztuczki)
Cert: 12A
