At last Zac gets to act in 17 again

Mike (Zac Efron) is a star in his high-school basketball team who gallantly throws his sports career away when he gets his girlfriend (Leslie Mann) pregnant.

Later we see him as a middle-aged man (Matthew Perry, who doesn’t look a bit like Efron). His marriage has fallen apart, he has failed to get a promotion and is living with his billionaire best friend (Thomas Lennon), a nerd unable to get a girl.

What if Mike miraculously returned to the age of 17 in looks but remained 20 years older in outlook? That’s what Burr Steers’s thoroughly commercial movie posits — and it’s shrewd about the emotional flounderings that could result. It also gives Efron the chance to show he can actually act as well as look good.

The high-school scenes include a strange passage during which everyone is abjured to retain their virginity despite the fact that practically everyone in the film has lost theirs already. But this aside, 17 Again is good-humoured, pacy and exactly the right kind of entertainment for its target audience. The 400 Blows would be even better — but I doubt they would be keen to see a subtitled film in black and white.
