Battle between good and evil

Sergei Lukyanenko and Vladimir Vasiliev's novels Night Watch and Day Watch, in which supernatural battles between the forces of good and evil are played out in the streets of contemporary Moscow, are best-sellers in Russia.

And Timur Bekmambetov's films are equally successful as swirling, big budget efforts reminiscent of Hollywood horror at its most hysterically daft.

You sit in front of this colourful mess wondering what is going on. The best bet seeming to be just to watch and wonder at the cheek of it.
