Liz Mermin's documentary focuses on the shooting of a Bollywood film, which was held up when Sanjay Dutt, its star, was arraigned for owning a gun and having possible connections with the underworld.

The film was Shootout at Lokhandwala, in which Dutt played real-life Bombay supercop AA Khan, who was famously involved in a battle to the death with the well-known gangster Maya Dolas. Now retired, Khan suggests in an interview that the best thing to do is to shoot arch-criminals on sight and worry about things such as the law afterwards.

Though the story was based on truth, it is clear that what the makers of Shootout at Lokhandwala wanted was a good piece of entertainment, cliches and all. The impression you get is that it is just as difficult to make this sort of movie as it is to avoid turning drama into melodrama.

Time is of the essence, money is short and the stuntmen complain they never even get to meet the director. But a leading actor says that at least he is not now making four films at once, as in the old days.

This is an intriguing documentary. But it does go on rather, just like the films they make in Bollywood - which often seem to take almost as long to sit through as they do to shoot.
