Bombay Beach - review

Bombay Beach is a once-prosperous desert area in California that is now forlornly inhabited by some of those worst affected by the present slump. Alma Har'el, the director, tries a lyrical, even poetic approach to recording the experiences of a group of desolates, using documentary footage but also choreographed dance sequences and reconstructed events.
It's a risk but her sympathies with her subjects is patently obvious, and the songs of Bob Dylan on the soundtrack urge your attention. Har'el seems to tell us that nobody can be completely defeated, even by the most unfortunate circumstances.
