Breathless has some remarkable moments

It may be too long and repetitious, but this directing debut from South Korean actor Yang Ik-June has some remarkable moments, chiefly involving Yang himself in the lead role.

He is Song-Hoon, a low-rent gangster paid by an old criminal friend to be his enforcer. He has a vile temper due to a lousy upbringing. Yet when he meets up with an equally tough-talking high-school girl (Kim Khonni), he melts.

Breathless is as tough as teak and violent. But it’s certainly original, and Yang’s turn is little short of classic.
