Cloud 9 is tender and truthful

Cloud 9 tells of a seventysomething veteran who has an affair with a married sixtysomething woman — and dares to show sex scenes generally confined to the young and beautiful.

German director Andreas Dresden wanted to tell this painful romance as if his characters were young and, for the most part, he has succeeded.

His film may not be a masterpiece but it is tender, truthful and acted with great sensitivity by Ursula Werner and Horst Westphal as the lovers, and Horst Rehberg as the devastated husband.

Perhaps the conclusion makes drama into melodrama — but there’s no doubt Dresden’s courage pays dividends.
