Jean Becker’s film is exactly what it says it is: a rich and successful painter (Daniel Auteuil) hires a local man (Jean-Pierre Darroussin) to make him a kitchen garden at his country house.

The man turns out to have been in the same class at school and is now a retired and relatively uneducated railwayman.

As they get to know each other, it is not easy to say who learns more from whom. Becker clearly thinks the working-class figure has much to teach the divorced artist, whose wife and daughter oppose his selfishness.

This is simply made, well acted and in the end movingly able to show us how two totally different men cleave to each other.

In all, it’s like a nice short story, beautifully set within the French countryside. If it hasn’t the subtleties and resonance of Agnès Jouai’s marvellously Rohmer-like Let’s Talk About the Rain, its essential sentimentality is almost equally charming.

And the performances alone are worth the price of admission.
