Daylight Robbery not stealing the show
28 August 2008
Fortysomething Paris Leonti, one-time driver for the stars, has had to wait a long time to make his first feature. This small-budget heist movie, though hardly very original, is at least made with complete professionalism.
The bank robbers in this case are football fans, with tickets for the World Cup in Germany and a yen to live richly afterwards.
Before embarking on easyJet for the football, they have a few hours to spare to rob the London Exchange Bank of £70 million. Once they are in, shouting and screaming at the employees, the boys drill into both the vaults and an underground passageway. One of them, however, is badly injured, the police are outside trying to calm things down and we know something will probably go wrong in the end.
It does, but writer-director Leonti orchestrates his thriller with a reasonably deft hand and his cast, which includes Johnny Harris, Shaun Williamson, Jeff Bell and Vas Blackwood, go to it all with a will. The film has been sold to 17 countries and no doubt Mr Leonti will have someone driving him soon.
