Decline highlighted in Vanishing of the bees
09 October 2009
Ecological disaster may be upon us in the apparently worldwide decline of the bee population. Maryam Henein and George Langworthy’s documentary calmly tells us why and looks around for a solution.
Is it pesticides, parasites or a symptom of changes in large-scale agricultural practice? We don’t know. But what is called colony collapse disorder is a serious matter since bees pollinate a third of everything we eat, including the crops of almost 100 fruits and vegetables, vital to health. It is, according to this film, already necessary to fly thousands upon thousands of the remaining healthybees from one continent to another to do their pollinating job, and beekeepers around the world are gathering to plead for help from scientists and governments. After watching this, you’ll probably end up worrying as much as they do.
