Director should desist

George Romero, doyen of horror, has made better films than this low-budget zombie saga.

Its originality, however, is this: a group of student film-makers are shooting an amateurish version of Night of the Living Dead when they realise they have to escape real zombies prowling the land.

Keeping their cameras with them, they shoot a blood-stained reality as they stumble across country to the imagined safety of their homes.

Even as their friends die they keep filming, finally shooting their own movie's intended ending for real.

Meanwhile, the government first denies and then promises to do something about the undead. Of course, they can't. It's much too late.

This is presumably Romero's comment on the Bush administration's fibbing - but it's hardly as sharp as it could be. Perhaps Romero should now desist. You can't go on for ever making the same film.
