Documentary-like images of the Chechen conflict

Aleksandr Sokurov isn’t everyone’s idea of an easy-to-watch film-maker. But his bleached-out, documentary-like images of the Chechen conflict are more impressive than many a more obviously dramatic epic.

He cast Galina Vishnevskaya, once one of Russia’s finest singers, as an ageing grandmother arriving at a Russian army base outside Grozny to see her soldier grandson.

She is appalled by the filth and the privations the troops endure and an encounter with a local stallholder (Raisa Gichaeva) convinces her that the occupied are as desperate as the occupiers.

The war is shown as both bloody and futile and Sokurov’s palpable sense of outrage is quietly impressive.

Sokurov is able to say things about the terrible conflict without obvious polemic but to the maximum possible effect.

That’s largely why he is one of the most audacious and original directors in the world today.
