Exposing prejudice in Special People
20 November 2008
Justin Edgar has expanded into a feature his 12-minute short about a patronising but essentially decent film-maker making a movie with disabled teenagers. It works perfectly well in its longer but still trim version.
Dominic Coleman plays the director, who eagerly accepts the challenge of helping the three teenagers make their own film on a chaotic trip to the countryside.
David Proud, Robyn Frampton and Jason Maza are excellent as the youngsters and Edgar’s light touch and lack of sentimentality work in his favour. We are allowed to forget the wheelchairs and see the people in them, while still remembering the prejudices many have about the disabled.
