Expressing the worst fears

Early on in Away From Her, Julie Christie's Fiona takes a frying pan from Grant (Gordon Pinsent), her husband of 45 years, and carefully puts it away in the freezer.
It is the first small sign that she is suffering from the onset of Alzheimer's, as subtle and chilling as a shadow passing over a grave. Canadian Sarah Polley's film, her first feature as writer and director, is a bleakly delicate examination of dementia's horrors, both for sufferers and those who love them.
Fiona realises she is losing her grip and commits herself to a care home, against the wishes of Grant who, with the selfishness of those left behind, thinks she may be punishing him for past wrongs. Cruelly, after an enforced 30-day separation for her to "settle in", Fiona forgets who Grant is and forms an attachment with another patient.
Fiona becomes less stylish, less poised, but the process of the disease is most keenly felt in the minor bewilderments that cross her face, and in her ski-walking scenes in the wastes of Ontario, where she looks alone and lost.
Christie's is a magnificently understated performance, matched by Pinsent's, in a film that surely expresses the worst fears of many of us.
