French all-stars in Heartbreaker

It isn’t surprising that Hollywood is thinking about an American remake of Pascal Chaumeil’s smash hit French rom-com. It looks like an American film already, smart and sassy but without much depth.
It’s the stars who make the difference. They are Vanessa Paradis, the model, singer and actress who is Johnny Depp’s partner, and Romain Duris, one of the best screen actors in Europe. He plays Alex, a serial seducer whose speciality is separating lovers for money.
He won’t do so if they are truly happy — he has a conscience of sorts — but he has no qualms about trying to prevent the marriage between Juliette (Paradis) and a rich Englishman (Andrew Lincoln).
He feels certain she will get bored.
The money is to be paid by the girl’s father, who also believes the match is futile and arranges for Alex to be engaged as his daughter’s bodyguard. Naturally she can’t stand Alex but, equally naturally in films of this sort, she learns to like him. And he, of course, falls head over heels for her. He actually means it when he delivers the spiel he has practised a hundred times over on other girls.
That’s all there is to the plot. But the film is set in Monte Carlo, which is an excuse for some nice cinematography, and the screenplay delivers crisp lines that give the principals something with which to play. It is predictable, but Chaumeil, who has worked for Luc Besson, rolls the whole thing along with a certain Gallic flourish.
