Game on for Resident Evil

The fourth instalment of the video-game-turned-movie franchise — and the first to be shot in 3D — sees Alice (Milla Jovovich, pictured) stripped of her superhuman powers and teaming up with old buddy Claire (Ali Larter). There’s also a new bunch of survivors, all desperate to avoid the zombies unleashed by a deadly virus.

Jovovich has a new hairdo and costume and looks like Katharine Hepburn in Sylvia Scarlett. Alas, she is still the thespian equivalent of a plank of wood. At one point, Alice and Claire have a fight with a hood-wearing giant with an axe who just won’t quit. Maybe it’s because we can’t see the whites of his eyes, maybe it’s because an axe hurtling towards the screen works pretty well in 3D — either way, his presence deals the only knockout blow.
