Haunting story of a 'Nazi hunter'

"Nazi hunter" has a glamorous ring, but as this harrowing documentary makes clear, the life of Simon Wiesenthal, who died in 2005, was anything but. Despite his high profile, he and his family lived in fear for their lives and, in the early 1980s, his exposure of an Austrian politician's SS past turned the whole country against him.

The film, shot and written by his friends, is by no means perfect. It was probably thought a great coup to get Nicole Kidman on board as narrator; in fact, her saucy kitten voice is distracting.

The observations by Wiesenthal's daughter, however, are fresh and moving and Wiesenthal's own eloquence carries the day. Eyes sparkling with tears, he calls himself a "researcher", a term that hardly conveys his contribution to the world, but somehow fits this haunted and haunting man like a glove.
