Meet Andi and Bruce (Emma Roberts and Jake T Austin), two orphaned, adorable siblings who just want to snuggle with their dog, Friday. But wait. The pair, in order to buy food for Friday, rob a pawnbroker and when the poor sap goes to the police, Andi accuses him of stalking her. Is that adorable?

Being a cat lover, I was perhaps never the ideal audience for this kiddie comedy. The spiky Lisa Kudrow and Kevin Dillon appear as Andi and Bruce’s foster parents. They hate the children — and they have my fullest sympathy.

Things perk up temporarily when our so-called heroes — with the help of some other urchins — create the titular hotel for stray dogs. They become obsessed with feeding, but more importantly, toilet training, more and more mutts.

Where does the endless supply of dog food come from? Where does the endless supply of dog poo go? These questions remain unanswered, but there’s no denying the kids’ lunatic energy.

Alas, it gives way to cuddles all round and even some light petting. At the start, Kudrow’s character tells the time-wasting kids, "You owe me 30 seconds of my life." I’m owed rather more.
