Transforming Japanese manga comics into a live-action film rarely works but I expected more from this farrago, based on a cartoon that has already generated $4 billion in merchandising sales.

The producer, Stephen Chow, made the funny and original Kung Fu Hustle, but here he and director James Wong get into a terrible mess. Among the stars are Justin Chatwin as Goku, a young warrior who protects the earth from James Marsters’s evil Lord Piccolo; Emmy Rossum and Jamie Chung as the girls he gets involved with; and veteran star Chow Yun-Fat as Goku’s Master.

I mention these names to whet the appetities of the teens who may go for this movie. I can’t say I did.
