Noel Coward inspired my 50-year career, says John Hurt

Veteran actor John Hurt modestly attributed his glittering 50-year career to simply "pressing on" as he was honoured for his contribution to British cinema.

Hurt, 72, received a standing ovation before giving an emotional speech as he accepted the Alexander Walker Special Award, named in honour of the late Evening Standard film critic.

Hurt said Walker had once called him "the nation's favourite victim" but added: "I don't feel a victim tonight." He also paid tribute to the Standard, saying the paper "has always championed film and always championed theatre for that matter. For that reason alone, I'm really, really grateful".

He recalled how many years ago, he met Noel Coward who signed a book for him and added the words: "Press on".

"I've taken that advice to heart ever since," he said. "I have done what I can."

Hurt is perhaps best known for his roles in the Elephant Man, Alien, Midnight Express and most recently, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

He added: "I feel very flattered, I feel very honoured, and I don't feel that I deserve it. I really don't.

"I'm really not that modest. I can be horribly arrogant ... I'm enormously respectful of the kindness of the people who decided to give it to me."

He was presented with the award by Stephen Frears, who directed him in the 1984 film The Hit.

Paying tribute to his friend, he said: "He is the very best of the breed, who brings the same level of fire and commitment to a leading role or a cameo."
