One-arm bandit on the fiddle
03 January 2008
The violin of the title belongs to an elderly, one-handed Mexican peasant farmer who uses his precious instrument to gain the confidence of a brutal army officer. The old man is played superbly by Angel Tavina, amazingly giving his first performance on film at the age of 81.
Assisted by his son and grandson, the veteran scrapes together a living as a musician by day and amasses arms and provisions for the rebels by night in the fight against a cruel military regime.
Once his village has been taken over and sacked, he has to venture back to retrieve the arms stash hidden in his cornfields.
The only way he can do it is to interest the commanding officer in his violin, and the catandmouse interplay between the two makes an intriguingly personal social realist thriller.
Directed by Francisco Vargas, it is based on his own prize-winning short film and eloquently shot in black and white.
The weathered Tavina, who lost his hand in an accident at the age of 13, makes a fittingly indomitable hero. He's a character you're likely to remember - his face alone is worth a thousand words.
