Overwhelming violence in film debut
22 May 2008
Some horror films laugh at our need for violence (Scream), some condemn us roundly (Funny Games). Others just bring on the torture. Tony Giglio’s debut is above average for this third type. Mike and Sheryl (Josh Randall and Brianna Brown), a city couple who visit West Virginia beauty spot Timber Falls, are plausibly and engagingly modern.
The script contains some lovely language (a park ranger says to his chirpy colleague: "Would you mind turning down the glee?"). However, unless you enjoy watching the human body being sliced and diced, you will soon lose the will to live. In fact, you may begin praying that Mike and Sheryl die quickly just so you can go home.
